Statement of Purpose
The PASSPORT After-School Program is funded in part by the United
Way and the 21st Century Learning Center Grant. It is a joint project
with Toledo Public Schools and Bowling Green State University. The
program is designed to improve elementary school students’
reading, writing, and computational skills in preparation for proficiency
testing. The program combines education, cultural, social, civic,
and recreational experiences to help students develop academic and
social competencies. The project operates at Pickett Elementary
School and serves 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students.
Funded in part by the United Way of Greater
Toledo, this joint project with Toledo Public schools and Bowling
Green State University, is designed to improve elementary school
students’ reading, writing, and computational skills in preparation
for proficiency testing. The program combines educational, cultural,
social, civic, and recreational experiences to help students develop
academic and social competencies. The program operates out of Pickett
Elementary School and serves 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders. An additional
component teaches conflict resolution and mediation skills. The
aim is to provide training to elementary school children in resolving
classroom, juvenile, domestic, and neighborhood disputes by using
non-violent methods.
Program Highlights

92 Pickett Elementary students in PASSPORT Program
• Sixty-five
students remained in program for the year
• 70
unduplicated volunteers served the program
• Fifty-five
(55) volunteers were from Bowling Green State University and fifteen
(15) were from the community
• Volunteers
gave 6,000 hours of service
• Tutoring
was extended to fifth and sixth grade students due to need
• Six
students had perfect attendance for the school year
• Four
students made the Honor Roll every quarter
• Seventeen
of the 4th grade students enrolled passed the math and reading portion
of the proficiency test
• Books
from the National Urban League were distributed to Pickett students
for the third year
